 Dear Major O'Keefe:
 July 2, 1981l~ c3'
In our discussions on June 25 with LTC Watt and LTC Jachim, we covered a
variety of subjects and I mentioned several authors and books that may be
of interest to you for background on the subject of parapsychology (or
paraphysics as the Soviets sometime refer to it).
Dr. Charles Tart, Professor of Psychology at the University of California,
Davis, has researched and written extensively on a number of areas in
parapsychology including hypnosis, out-of-body experiences and altered
states of consciousness. Some of the work he has either edited or written
 includes:
Altered States of Consciousness: A Book of Reading (1969, revised
1972), Mind at Large (1979), States of Consciousness (1975), Learniin
to Use Extrasensor Perception (1976), and Psi: Scientific Studies of
 the Psychic Realm (1976).
Two researchers at the Stanford Research Institute at Menlo Park,
California, Harold Puthoff and Russel Targ have written about their
experiements in out-of-body phenomena in Mind-Reach (1977). Their
experimental methodology has been faulted by some, most notiably by James
Randi in The Truth About Unicorns, Parapsychology and Other Delusions
(1980). Mr. Randi is a founding member of the Committee for the
Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal.
While we did not discuss it, I consider dowsing to be a fundamental act of
paranormal activity. The best book on this subject is The Divining Hand
 (1979) by Christopher Bird.

A great deal about psychic phenomena and Dr. Tanous can be learned from
his book Beyond Coincidence: One Man's Experiences With Psychic Phenomena
 (with Harvey Ardman).
A book by Clifford Linedecker, Psychic Spy (1976) tells the story of
Ernert Montgomery and how he was used by British intelligence during World
War II to gather intelligence in out-of-body work. Incidentally,
Montgomery claims that he encountered German agents in their out-of-body
collection efforts. The specific account of which Montgomery is most
proud concerns his alleged projection in time to determine what the
 invasion day weather would be.
A very readable account of psychic archaeology is The Secret Vaults of
Time (1978) by Stephan Schwartz. I recommend this work because it shows
how a classical academic discipline, archaeology, has been and is being
successfully assisted by practical application of psychic phenomena.
There are hundreds of books on many psychic subjects. Some are
superficial and some outright hoaxes. If you have a particular area of
interest I will be most happy to assist in identifying the best literature
 on the subject.
 Sincerely,
 Cecil B. Jones
