The Jason Project at the Woods
Hole Oceanographic Institu-
tion provides graphic evi-
dence of what robotics and photon-
ics can deliver without the immedi-
ate presence of man.
Woods Hole is the institution that
in 1986 brought the world images of
the remains of the R.M.S. Titanic,
more than 70 years after it sank from
sight in the waters of the North At-
lantic.
The more recent Jason Project
teams tics and imaging with
fiber op
robotics in an effort to make Dr. Rob-
ert D. Ballard's dream of "telepres-
ence" - the use of telecommunica-
tions technology to create a simu-
lated presence at a remote site - a
reality.
The Woods Hole researchers, in-
cluding Ballar and Project Manager
Andy Bowen, developed a fiber optic
cable to transmit both data from sen-
sors and television images. A 4000-
meter cable was built and special
shipboard handling systems were
devised to prevent the fiber cable
from kinking and causing distortion
in the television image: The new ca-
ble can transmit to the surface high-
quality color television images taken
by the robot, Jason.
